KUNMING KITTYHAWKS: (AVG)

In another great color image by AVG Fighter “Ace” “R.T.” Smith, seven newly arrived Curtiss P-40E Kittyhawk fighters of the American Volunteer Group are seen lined up along the runway at Kunming’s Wujiaba airfield in the early summer on 1942. Starting in late March of 1942, a small trickle of the more advanced Curtiss P-40E fighters started arriving in China to replace the AVG’s battle worn, Curtiss Hawk 81-A-2 (P-40B Tomahawk) fighters.
