CHENNAULT DECORATES ONE OF HIS BOYS

Brigadier General Claire L. Chennault, as Commander of the China Air Task Force is photographed while presenting a medal to Major Edward Rector F. Rector, the then commander of the 23rd Fighter Group’s 76th Fighter Squadron, during a banquet and awards ceremony in the city of Kunming. Ed Rector was one of the five original Flying Tigers, who following the July 4, 1942 deactivation of the American Volunteer Group, had volunteered to stay on with Chennault in China for a second full combat tour. Rector rotated back to the US in December 1942, but would return to China in December 1944, to again serve under Chennault, as the commander of the by then, all Mustang equipped, 23rd Fighter Group.
