RECON WARHAWK: (14TH AIR FORCE)

Lt. Henry Davis of the 23rd Fighter Group’s 118th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron is seen in the cockpit of his Curtiss P-40N Warhawk at Kweilin (Guilin) in September 1944.

The Squadron’s Warhawks were equipped with aerial cameras and guns, which gave them the flexibility to fly both aerial combat and photo-reconnaissance missions. The Three Japanese flags that are painted beneath the forward canopy section of Lt. Davis’s cockpit indicate that he has destroyed three Japanese aircraft in aerial combat.

By the end of 1944, all of the Squadron’s P-40’s had been replaced with P-51C, F-6C and P-51D Mustangs.

The photo is one of the many terrific wartime photographic images of aircraft and pilots of the 118th TRS, that are part of Robert Bourlier’s collection.
