MINGALADON TOMAHAWK: (AVG)

A ground staff member of the American Volunteer Group, utilizes his jeep to strikes a confidant pose in front of one of the Group’s Curtiss Hawk 81-A-2 (P-40B Tomahawk) fighters at the Royal Air Force airfield at Mingaladon, just outside of Rangoon, Burma.

This particularly aircraft was assigned to the AVG’s 3rd Pursuit Squadron, the “Hell’s Angels,” and was flown by AVG Flight Leader and 8.8 kill Fighter “Ace” Robert “R.T.” Smith.

Just visible behind Smith’s aircraft is a Brewster Buffalo of the Royal Air Force’s Number 67 Squadron, the British fighter squadron the AVG shared the airfield at Mingaladon with.
