THE BANSHEES: (10TH AF)
Pilots of the 80th Fighter Group’s 89th and 90th Fighter Squadrons, the “Burma Banshee,” are seen with a line-up of their Curtiss P-40N Warhawk fighters in India’s northeastern Assam Valley. The large white skull makings that gave the 80th Fighter Group its name are clearly seen in the photo.
The photo marks the engagement that took place on March 27, 1944, when the eight pilots seen in this photo were credited with destroying 18 Nakajima Ki-49 “Helen” bombers and Nakajima Ki-43 “Oscar” fighters, during the course of a single combat.
